A top trend in Boulder, CO, homes and businesses today is painting the ceiling as a way of accenting a room. Statement ceilings have soared in popularity as people begin to imagine using the fifth wall as an extension of the room design.
At Jacobsen Brothers Painting, we love creating a ceiling design that will help tie a room together and add another dimension. Here are some things to consider when thinking about painting the ceiling:
Light or Dark
Before you choose a color, you will want to decide if you want your ceiling to be light and airy or dark and intimate. Light ceilings will open up a room while dark ones will close them in. Light ceilings look great in small spaces like laundry rooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Dark ceilings can make a bedroom more cozy or a living room more secluded and relaxing.
Flat or Glossy
As always, you will need to look at the room throughout the day to observe how the light plays in it. This will affect the kind of sheen that you choose. Most ceilings look best in a flat or matte paint to hide imperfections, but more and more people are choosing glossy paint to radiate more light in the room. A dining room with flat paint and low saturation neutrals on the walls becomes more interesting with an accent color and a glossy finish on the ceiling.
Your choice of color for the ceiling–or colors if you are doing trim and accents–will define the room. If the ceiling is not easily discernable from the walls, such as in an attic or graduated room, it will probably be best to keep the same color as the walls on into the ceiling. If there is a set distinction, you are free to choose anything from a neutral to an accent color.
If there is trim between the wall and ceiling, you can use the same color on the wall and ceiling, then use a clean white for the trim distinction. Love the wall color but want something different on the ceiling? Try cutting the wall color with white and using that less-saturated color on the ceiling.
An artistic ceiling, such as a night sky for a nursery or home theater, can be a beautiful thing. Murals have regained popularity as a form of self-expression in decorating. They help give a focal point to a room that has a minimalist design touch and put the “statement” into statement ceilings. Finally, our painters are experts at adding dimension through specialty artistic touches. Let’s talk about your ideas for art on your ceiling.
