As you age, your eyes slowly change which, in turn, changes how you perceive colors. Cataracts, depth perception changes and retina changes can all contribute to a change in color perception. Yellowing lenses bring more of an amber tint to the world and if a paint contains too much underlying yellow, it will alter the final effect of the color on the viewer.
That’s why it’s a good idea to take a second look at the color palette you are choosing by projecting how it will be perceived with eyes that are changing and aging. Another important consideration is safety. Colors on the floor need to be uniform since drastic changes in colors can cause missteps and create an impression of irregular flooring.
At Jacobsen Brothers Painting, we understand these evolving perceptions and know how to choose the right colors that will bring the best outcome to the customer. Here are some tips for choosing colors for aging eyes that will inspire and enliven.
Go Bright
If you are decorating for seniors, or if your own eyes are changing, bright colors might be a good choice. Since colors become more muted and gray when viewed through aging eyes, brighter colors can create interest, stimulate dwindling appetites, and help increase mental acuity.
Go Saturated
Since yellows are brought to the surface through the lens of the aging eye, it is a good idea to go with rich, saturated colors with few-to-no yellow undertones. If you choose a soft blue, make sure it is saturated and has fewer grays in it. Lighting can also have a big impact on how the color is perceived. Pastels, blues and greens can become hard to distinguish unless proper lighting is applied.
Go Natural
When decorating for seniors, colors from nature can be calming, peaceful and pleasant. Grassy greens, river water blues, clay stones and granite grays harken to the natural colors that they have enjoyed all of their lives. This color palette can instill confidence by infusing a sense of familiarity and accomplishment.
