5 Hacks for Creating a Whole House Color Palette

The key to creating a congruous house is to look at it as a whole. Planning a color palette for your whole house can help each room blend into the next. At Jacobsen Brothers Painting, we can help you blend a harmony of colors to complement each other, creating a unified look throughout your home.

Also, it will help you when you are renovating, moving furniture from room to room, or making decorating decisions. Your choices will become much clearer when you have a color scheme in place.

Ready to get started? Here are our 5 best hacks for choosing your whole house color palette.

Start with what you own

Unless you have an unlimited budget, you likely already own things that you will be keeping. For example, if you have a bright red sofa, you already know you will be decorating around that. Make a list of the colors you have and whether they have cool or warm undertones. Then, compare that to the mood you want to set in that particular room. This will help you start to make a plan for that room and beyond as you put together the look for the entire house.

Choose 3 to 5 colors

Now it’s time to embrace the colors you love. But for continuity, you will need to limit those colors to just a few. They can be anything from accent walls to select room accents, but you should be able to use your all-time favorite colors throughout the house. Keep these colors in mind as you work and refine your palette.

Trim and ceiling carries the day

As you work, remember to use the same trim color and ceiling color throughout the house. This will help keep continuity. Many decorators like to start with the kitchen. If you’re using a white trim there, that’s the color to take throughout the house. Ceilings that match the trim will tie it all together. However, if a ceiling is very low, consider going one step lighter in color to expand the space. Since bathrooms are small spaces, they usually use one neutral color for everything—the trim, walls, and ceiling.

Step by step

Building a color palette can be as easy as 1-2-3.

  1. First, choose your white. This will likely be your trim and ceiling color. It can also be the color inside closets and even be your kitchen cabinet color.
  2. Then, choose a neutral color that you like. This can be a very subtle shade of color, such as a greige. But it can also be a milky cappuccino or wispy gray.
  3. Next, choose your hero color – the one you absolutely adore. This is usually a saturated color. You don’t necessarily have to use it in all its strength. Find it on a color swatch and then move a few spaces away to identify it in a lighter shade and even a pastel option.
  4. Now, add 2 more colors to complement your main color. Done! That’s 5 colors on your palette!

Remember, you can go with shades of your main color and two supporting colors and use them in different ways to make each room unique. Or, use complementary colors which are side by side on the color wheel. Another option is to use contrasting colors on the opposite side of the color wheel.

Special note for kitchens

Start with the countertop when choosing kitchen colors. If there is a neutral in the pattern, choose that for the neutral. If there is a color accent you love, use that for an accent color. The 3 or 4 colors that you develop from your countertop can then be used throughout the house. For this reason, the kitchen is a great place to start your color palette quest.
